If an emergency means I put in hours on a Friday, I make sure I get time off in lieu. Yes I’m at my desk before 8am but I often take a whole hour at lunch to run and I finish religiously before 5.30pm. I think the key, for me, is coming with a mindset that work is not everything. After that, apps and other tools might be useful but without the mindset, stepping away from work will bring guilt. So long as you believe that work is just about bringing the pennies and preferably giving you some satisfaction, but not something you owe to your employer, then resisting working 14h days shouldn’t be something you need to put effort into.
